Ch5 The realisation of a childhood dream (dedication to Mr Graeme Evans)

Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to leave Hong Kong and study in another country. I remembered expressing this desire to my parents even I was only a junior school student. There's always an immense curiosity inside me wanting to know more outside my little world in Hong Kong.   Even though most people would think I've studied overseas when they first met me, they were then surprised by the fact that was not the case. "Where did you learn your English from?" is always the first question people ask me in our first encounter. Then I would explain to them I simply submerge myself with English songs, videos, and movies and being very aware if I was pronouncing words correctly through active listening. Although experiencing life in another country has always been my wish, the financial situation of my family did not allow it happen, and I was not aware of working holiday visa until I was too old to apply it.    After my education, I started working

Ch4 Spiritual life at Saddleback Hong Kong (Dedication to my small group!)

After I got back to Hong Kong from my first spiritual experience at St. Philips and inspiration from Elaine, I started attending Saddleback Hong Kong one year ago. It's quite unlike the other churches I had been in Hong Kong but closer to the church I've visited in Australia. Their presentation style is more contemporary. Pastor Stephen is the main pastor in Hong Kong. He usually gives a short sermon for an introduction before we watch the message from the main church in US.     I'm not quite sure what causes the difference. Maybe my education since S1(Yr7) was English based so I found the messages much easier to comprehend. I also found people in the church very joyful which I had difficulties experiencing such level of joy in my life. Very soon after attending a few times with my husband, my friend who was also my ex-colleague, Deborah, told me that she also went to the same church and so we started catching up with one another.    God did not promise that life was

Ch3 The prayer which empowered my life (a dedication for Elaine Yeung)

Beside the godly attributes of St Philip's people, even the tour leader assigned into our trip is a dedicated Christian. Elaine had been working as a tour leader for years and she had led people to places like Israel and Jerusalem for spiritual travel experiences. We stayed in bedrooms right next to each other at Brian and Lyndall's place. At night, we would debrief our day in our mother tongue with our perspective. We were both amazed by the people we met and experiences we had. She mentioned that she would recommend this school to her relatives who would like to put their children for overseas education. She's also caring and non-judgemental and very soon we shared genuinely with each other.      I told Elaine that I was both thrilled and sad from my immersion experience, because while I enjoyed the genuine communication we had with people during our stay; it wasn't the reality of my life I had in Hong Kong and I was confused about my career path and my family l

Ch2 Cultural discrepancies

The unfamiliar names in the email became real personal connections during our stay. Brian and Lyndall are a veteran teacher couple in St. Philips. They kindly hosted the tour leader, Elaine and me in their spacious house. I had never met any couple quite like them before.      Brian is steady and quiet but everything he does for his class, he thinks for the students; so selflessly that we felt he cared more about Hong Kong students' experience more so than us. He thought it would be great to let Hong Kong students fly a kite on the beach, but he couldn't find the kite. For any teachers, we might just think of other ways to replace the kite flying experience; but he would spend two or three days flipping over his home and office, just to find a good kite for our students to fly on the beach. When he led our students to the beach, he was so passionate and enthusiastic about having fun with our students. I couldn't make sense of his genuine love and kindness to children

Ch1 How the spiritual journey began...

In 2016, I was working in a Christian primary school in Hong Kong and was assigned to be the coordinator for an immersion study programme with a partnering school in Australia.     I was born in post-war British colonial Hong Kong, a city on the verge of drastic transformation and restructuring its own identity as an international commercial centre. Learning English was perceived as an inevitable mean to ensure academic and professional success in life. Fortunately, I actually love learning English besides its practical benefits. With my childhood being perpetuated by Western media and English based secondary and tertiary education, I was always intrigued by how lives are like in English speaking places.      With the mission to help Hong Kong students and Australian students create memorable cultural exchange experiences of their life time, I tried to coordinate the program by working closely with Mr Graeme Evans, the Head of Middle School of St Philips Christian College i
